The Story Behind Eternal FrontMore than twenty years ago, my best friend Mike and I found a homemade-looking card game in a Gettysburg gift shop. The rules weren’t the best, and the pictures were hand-drawn, but someone had created a game and gotten it onto a shelf. It made us think: we could do this, too. That idea stayed with me. I’ve always loved history, collectible card games, and wargaming. I wanted to bring them together—the collecting and deck-building of a card game with the maneuvering and unpredictable battles of a wargame. Above all, I wanted players to feel like generals commanding real armies inspired by the people and events of history. In late 2025, Mike and I sat down with pencil, paper, and dice and began turning that idea into Eternal Front. My daughter Rebecca designed the card layouts and logo, Mike’s son Logan created our hype video, and friends joined us to playtest and encourage us along the way.I’m an auto mechanic with a game I’ve wanted to make for years. AI-generated art helped make getting started possible, but my goal is to grow into commissioning original artwork from artists.Today, Eternal Front is in beta testing, beginning with Greece and Persia. My hope is that these first battles will grow into a game that explores warfare throughout the ages—and inspires players to discover the remarkable stories behind their cards.J. Breton Lynn

The Story Behind Eternal FrontMore than twenty years ago, my best friend Mike and I took a trip to Gettysburg with our families. In a gift shop, we purchased a card game based on the battle that took place there. The rules weren’t the best, and the pictures were hand-drawn, but someone had actually gotten a game published and put it up for sale in a gift shop. That simple game sparked our creativity and opened up the possibility that we could create a game ourselves. Mike set out to make one based on the wars of the Chinese dynasties—and he did. With pencil and paper, he constructed a game that we could sit down and play together. I never stopped thinking about the potential that little Gettysburg game had shown us.I’ve always loved history. As a young boy, I enjoyed poring over the pictures in history books, learning about medieval knights and Civil War generals. I loved visiting museums and battlefields with my parents and learning about the men who fought and the heroic things they did.My mind would wander to images of sprawling armies and the rallying speeches of their commanders, furious firefights alongside comrades in arms, or soldiers defending a position against all odds. I loved studying battlefield maps—the red and blue blocks representing units of men, where they were positioned, and how they maneuvered. As I grew older, those interests found their way into hobbies like collectible card games, role-playing games, and wargaming. While I still love traditional collectible card games, I always thought it would be fun to move and maneuver my cards like units on a battlefield. What if you could command them the way you command an army in a wargame?I love wargaming, too. I love painting figures and setting up terrain. But portability is often an issue, and the army you can field depends heavily on what you can afford. Collectible card games lacked the tactical maneuvering I loved in wargaming, while wargaming lacked the portability and thrill of collecting rare cards that I loved about CCGs.I wanted to bring those experiences together. I wanted players to feel like generals on a battlefield and have to deal with the unexpected: plucky units holding their ground, elite troops breaking under an unexpected attack, and the fickle nature of maintaining the support of their people.History felt like the natural place to begin. So much of our world is filled with stories about people who never lived, while the stories of people who actually walked this earth can be more incredible than anything we make up.I want Eternal Front to hinge on the actions of the men on the ground—the rank-and-file soldiers who do the fighting and dying—while also highlighting the great leaders who led their people. I want that same spark of history to ignite players’ imaginations and inspire them to learn more about real people who did real things on this earth. To be upfront and honest, it wasn’t until AI-generated art became available that I began to think I could actually make this happen. I’m an auto mechanic. I don’t have the money to invest upfront in a team of artists, and I don’t have the artistic skills to do it myself. The goal is to pay real artists for real artwork—something people will want to own. AI art makes it possible for this game to get off the ground, but it isn’t where I want to stop.I started working seriously on Eternal Front in late 2025. Like so many games, it began with pencil and paper. Mike and I sat down, started creating cards, cracked each other up, and rolled dice.I knew I wanted to combine collecting cards, building decks, and wargaming, but the nuts and bolts still needed to be worked out, especially how combat would be resolved. What I landed on is a system that I feel captures some of the intangibles of the battlefield. It allows a story to emerge through both the tactical decisions players make and the rolls of the dice.I haven’t done this alone. Mike has always had a great mind for gaming. His thoughts work so differently from mine, and he helps me see things I would otherwise miss. My daughter Rebecca, our graphic design expert, designed the card layouts and the Eternal Front logo. Mike’s son Logan, also known as COMPAKT, created the hype video—which, at first, was probably more about hyping me up to get back to work than anything else. And I’ve been joined by incredible, brilliant friends who have playtested Eternal Front and encouraged me to forge ahead. My core design philosophy is simple: keep the wargaming rules to a minimum and let the cards do the bulk of the work. I also want the game grounded in reality wherever possible, with the broader truth of history taking precedence over a rigid accounting of facts and figures.Eternal Front is about war throughout the ages. I want to faithfully and respectfully portray the men who fought and died in the events that brought us to the present day. That means the game will deal with controversial topics and figures. War is hell, and the line between good and evil is not always as clear as we might think. Portraying a historical army or leader does not mean endorsing everything they stood for or did.Eternal Front is currently in beta testing, beginning with Greek and Persian beta sets. Getting the game into players’ hands is crucial to its development. Your feedback will help me iron out the wrinkles and improve the experience for everyone who brings it to the table. My dream is for Eternal Front to grow from set to set, moving forward through history toward the modern age while also branching out into other cultures and places. I want armies from different ages to remain viable alongside one another, regardless of their differences in technology. Above all, I envision a game that brings excitement to history and encourages people to explore its stories for themselves. My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has helped or encouraged me along the way. I encourage beta testers to share their feedback and introduce the game to friends. If there’s a period of history you would love to see represented, your participation helps make that possible.Personally, I can’t wait for an American Civil War set, though that’s many years down the road if all goes well. I would also love to hear from historical experts. If you have knowledge and passion for a particular period, please share it with me.Thank you for reading my story. I welcome you to try the beta sets once the crowd sale begins and to follow Eternal Front on Facebook and YouTube.Deus Vult,
